American Cocker Spaniels, let's talk about them!

Originally derived from the English Cocker Spaniel, the American Cocker Spaniel underwent selective breeding with other breeds to suit American preferences for smaller hunting companions adept at pursuing game birds. Possessing a medium size and energy level, coupled with a naturally cheerful disposition, they exhibit intelligence and trainability, particularly for hunting tasks, while remaining devoted to their families. Recognized by the American Kennel Club as early as 1878, these elegant dogs display a range of 13 colors and two distinct types of markings. Notably, they hold a significant presence in the United States, ranking among the most favored breeds according to the AKC.

When it comes to being a family pet, the American Cocker Spaniel is a top contender. These gorgeous pups are not only gentle, kind, and loving but also brilliant to consider if you have young children. The Cocker Spaniel is known for being gentle, affectionate and friendly, and is often referred to as the 'merry cocker' which is clearly demonstrated by its ever wagging tail!

We often get the question of whether we prefer one breed over the other, and to be very completely honest, no, we do not. The reason is that, yes, they do have many differences in their temperament, energy levels, and maintenance. However, we found them both equally sweet, affectionate and the best family dogs! Cavaliers tend to be more laid-back and easygoing, just the sweetest lap dogs; they are perfect for travel. Cockers are more high-energy and require more outside time to release their energy. They are great for learning new tricks, hiking, swimming, and getting active together. Maintenance is similar between the breeds regarding grooming as both need to be trimmed and keep their coats healthy.

Although they have differences, they are unique in their ways. Please feel free to contact us for any questions you may have!
